Overview
Why Perplexity Comet is a powerful AI Browsers tool
Perplexity Comet is a free, Chromium-based web browser built by Perplexity AI that puts an AI assistant at the center of everyday browsing instead of bolting a chatbot onto the side. Every tab opens with the Comet Assistant ready in a sidebar, able to read and summarize the page you're on, answer questions using the context of everything you have open, and carry out multi-step tasks on your behalf — drafting emails, comparing prices across sites, filling out forms, and even booking travel.
Originally launched in July 2025 as a desktop-only perk for Perplexity's highest-paying subscribers, Comet has since rolled out for free across macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS, with no account required to get started. It runs on Chromium, so existing bookmarks, passwords, browsing history, and Chrome extensions carry over during setup.
Because Comet is built by the team behind Perplexity's answer engine, its research features are citation-first: page summaries, follow-up questions, and in-browser Deep Research queries all come back grounded in real sources instead of freeform guesses. Paid Perplexity plans (Pro and Max) layer on faster models, higher usage limits, a "Model Council" mode that runs a query across multiple frontier models at once, and scheduled autonomous tasks that run in the background while you're away from the browser.
